Assistant gardeners create, develop and maintain green spaces in both the private and public sectors. Their work varies according to the cycle of the seasons and involves a wide range of tasks, from sowing seeds to pruning shrubs, from mowing to disposing of green waste.

Description of the job of gardening assistant

The job of gardening assistant involves a large number of tasks that follow the rhythm of the seasons:

  • soil preparation such as digging and weeding
  • sowing and protecting plantations
  • replacing different plants
  • maintaining surfaces by hoeing flower beds, raking leaves and removing moss
  • lawn maintenance, including mowing, spraying and rolling
  • maintenance and pruning of trees and shrubs
  • clearing undergrowth
  • disposal and recycling of green waste
  • maintenance of the tools and machines used
  • masonry work such as laying flagstones, paving stones or kerbs
  • adjusting and maintaining the sprinkler system

The tasks of a gardener's assistant vary depending on the employer's specialities, and may involve mainly creating or developing spaces and gardens, or more maintenance tasks (watering, mowing, clearing undergrowth, etc.).

Where and under what conditions do you work as a gardening assistant?

The gardener's employer may be a private landscape company, a public authority, a local authority, etc.
The person in charge is usually a team leader, works supervisor or company manager.
Garden helpers travel frequently and work in all weathers, whether they're working in public spaces or in private or company gardens.

So you need to be in good physical condition and enjoy working outdoors, whatever the weather.

Qualities and skills of a gardener

Several types of qualities and skills are expected of a gardening assistant

They must have a good theoretical knowledge of the different plants they look after: their species, flowering times, development and maintenance. An assistant gardener masters certain specific skills, such as planting and turfing methods, landscape masonry techniques and watering systems.
They have the ability to adapt to a wide range of sites and conditions.
He has a taste for meticulous work and precision. Creativity and a sense of aesthetics are among his strengths.
They have good interpersonal skills, enabling them to work as part of a team and maintain good customer relations.
Finally, awareness of sustainable development and other environmental issues is a real plus when working as a gardening assistant.

  • Duration of apprenticeship : 63 hours 
  • This training is accompanied by a 40-hour course with a work placement agreement to put your new knowledge into practice in a professional setting.
  • Training sessions only on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Session from 8 February to 10 May 2025
